Ingredients:
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 large onion, thinly sliced
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1/4 cup dry white wine optional
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 4 slices Swiss cheese
- 4 hamburger buns
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1/4 cup grated Gruyere cheese
- Fresh thyme leaves for garnish
Instructions:
In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium-low heat
Add the thinly sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until caramelized and browned, about 20-25 minutes
Season with salt and pepper to taste
While the onions are caramelizing, shape the ground beef into 4 burger patties and season them with salt and pepper
Heat the olive oil in another skillet or on a griddle over medium-high heat
Cook the burger patties to your desired level of doneness, about 4-5 minutes per side for medium-rare
In a small saucepan, heat the beef broth, white wine if using, and Worcestershire sauce
Bring to a simmer and let it reduce by half, about 10 minutes
Season with salt and pepper to taste
Preheat your ovens broiler
Place the burger patties on the bottom half of the hamburger buns
Top each patty with a slice of Swiss cheese
Place the burger buns with the patties and cheese under the broiler for a minute or until the cheese is melted and bubbly
To assemble the burgers, spoon some caramelized onions on top of each cheesy burger patty
